December 22, 2006 - From a political standpoint, I see RoHS as a logical consequence of widespread environmental abuse by business. People have attempted direct legal remedies and found that process to be too slow, costly and ineffective. Go ask people living next to chemical plants in Louisiana. November 7, 2006 - I first became aware of E-Certa in March of 2006. The idea of converting Pb-bearing parts to RoHS compliance was intriguing. Later, when I saw that a number of companies were applying for RoHS exemptions based on lifetime buys of Pb-containing parts, I thought that was odd given the E-Certa solution. This was clearly a case of "adaptation to scientific and technical progress" that was being ignored by the industry.

July 14, 2006 - My question is, what does all this mean from a compliance perspective? In the short term, it appears that the deca-BDE exemption is intact. The ultimate fate of the exemption hinges on the outcome of the lawsuit and the internal EC discussion. In my experience, this sort of dispute increases risk for affected businesses.
