AirportView.net Adds AWOS Finder With Current Weather METAR Data
Fort Collins, CO - AirportView.net has added a new feature, the AWOS Finder, to its collection of weather tools. The AWOS Finder delivers current METAR strings, decoded weather reports and full AWOS station information. Stations in the US may be browsed by state. International stations are browsed by country. Station information may include phone number, VHF frequency, location and type, as well as several other parameters.
Worldwide, more than 6,600 AWOS stations are active and Airport View has obtained access to METAR strings from most of them. It is standard to update METAR strings every hour. However, many of the US stations are updated every 20 minutes, providing more current observations. The Airport View AWOS Finder displays the most recent METAR string available. Decoded weather reports are also included with most stations.
Finding an AWOS station is easy, and it starts with a single page. If the desired station is in the US, just select the state and then view a list of stations in that state. The station ID is a link to the detailed station page. Color-coding indicates METAR availability and also identifies the stations in the private Airport View network.
Similarly, international AWOS stations may be located by selecting a country. The next page shows a list of stations in that nation. Each station ID links to a detail page showing the METAR and full information about the station.
As extensive as the NOAA network is, there are still privately owned AWOS stations that do not send weather reports to NOAA. Airport View is adding these private stations to a proprietary network and making the reports available on the AirportView.net web site. The METAR strings from these stations are available only through Airport View. The only other ways to access these stations are by phone or the VHF broadcast.
Airport View operates a network of weather cameras and displays the current weather images on its web site, AirportView.net. Each installation contains multiple cameras pointed at the sky. The server collects fresh images from each camera every minute. The web site provides camera viewers that can show the current image or time-lapse sequences of 1, 2 or 4 hours in length. A movie of the entire day is also available for each camera. Movies remain online for a full week.
